In order to legally operate dental x-ray equipment and perform dental radiologic procedures in the state of Arkansas, a dental assistant must be a Registered Dental Assistant (RDA) who holds a permit in radiology from the Arkansas State Board of Dental Examiners (ASBDE). To obtain this permit, one must: (1) Hold a current national DANB Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) Certification or graduate from a CODA-accredited dental assisting school or successfully complete an Arkansas Board-approved radiology course AND (2) Pass an Arkansas Board-approved radiology exam AND (3) Apply to the ASBDE.
To perform expanded functions under the personal supervision of a licensed dentist in the state of Arkansas, a dental assistant must hold a permit in the expanded functions listed below. After receipt of one or more of the expanded functions permits, a dental assistant is considered a Registered Dental Assistant (RDA) with the Arkansas State Board of Dental Examiners (ASBDE). To be issued a permit for any of the expanded functions listed below (except Sedation Monitoring, which has additional requirements), one must: (1a) Hold a current national DANB Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) Certification or (1b) Graduate from a CODA-accredited dental assisting school AND (2) Apply to the ASBDE.
Dental assistants who do not meet the above qualifications may still earn RDA status by completing the following requirements:
Coronal polishing: Successfully complete an Arkansas Board-approved course in coronal polishing, pass an Arkansas Board-approved coronal polishing exam, and apply to the ASBDE.
Monitor nitrous oxide/oxygen analgesia: Successfully complete an Arkansas Board-approved nitrous oxide administration and monitoring course, submit a copy of the certificate of completion to the ASBDE, successfully complete the Arkansas jurisprudence exam, and hold current Healthcare Provider level CPR certification.
Sedation monitoring: To obtain a permit for sedation monitoring, an individual must: (1) Hold a current permit for nitrous oxide administration AND (2) Hold current Healthcare Provider level CPR certification AND (3) Be a DANB CDA, an RDA, a Registered Nurse or a Licensed Practical Nurse AND (4) Successfully complete an Arkansas Board-approved course in anesthesia assistant training AND (5) Successfully complete the Arkansas jurisprudence exam AND (6) Apply to the ASBDE.
Note: To renew a permit to perform expanded functions, RDAs must provide the ASBDE proof of completing two hours of continuing education in infection control every two years.
